The Nurse of the Year
|
A ward sister on a busy oncology ward has won the prestigious 'Nurse/Midwife of the Year Award' at Guy?s and St Thomas? NHS Foundation Trust.
Amanda Coulcher, sister on Stanley Ward at Guy?s Hospital, was presented with the 'Nurse of the Year 2005' award as part of the Trust?s Nursing and Midwifery Day.
'Absolutely Delighted'
She said: ?I am absolutely delighted to have won and I feel totally overwhelmed. It is a great honour and I would like to thank everyone that I work with, particularly all the nurses.?
Amanda impressed judges with her dedication to patient centred care and commitment to the smooth running of the ward. Stanley Ward is a busy oncology (cancer) ward and Amanda has inspired and motivated her team of nurses, health care assistants, student nurses, ward clerks and domestic staff, to provide innovative and research based care.
Through her skilful leadership all staff work together as a team to deliver the highest standards of patient care. As a result the ward is a positive environment where staff are highly motivated.
Amanda sets high standards for both herself and her staff. She constantly listens to patients and their carers, and reviews patient care to ensure that it is both patient focussed and of the highest possible standard.
Inspirational Leader
Paula Wilkins, Head of Nursing Outpatient & Patient Support Services, who nominated her, said: ?Amanda is an inspirational leader. Staff want to follow her and emulate her very high standards of care, communication and dedication. She is a fantastic role model for all staff within her clinical area and for Guy?s and St Thomas? NHS Foundation Trust.?
Amanda was presented with her award by Eileen Sills, Chief Nurse and Joint Director of Clinical Leadership for the Trust, who said: ?Amanda has contributed a great deal not only to her ward but to the Trust as a whole. Her dedication and commitment to caring for patients is to be commended and she has been an inspiration to all the staff in her team.?
Amanda has been the sister on Stanley Ward since January 2004. She first joined the ward in 1998 as a staff nurse but left in 2002 to work for Medecins sans Frontieres in Zambia where she cared for patients with HIV and AIDS. Amanda returned to Stanley Ward in 2003 as a senior staff nurse before being promoted to sister just over a year ago.
