Flexible Works For Hounslow
The secret of Hounslow Primary Care Trust's (PCT) successful GP recruitment campaign is flexibility according to Dr Nasir, the first of the Trust's new recruits.

Dr Zaheer Nasir, based at Bedfont Surgery, is the first of 14 new Hounslow GPs who works under the Personal Medical Services (PMS) scheme. He has now been joined by 2 female partners, Dr. Jenny Watson and Dr. Nighat Khan, completing the Bedfont team.

Other doctors have since joined practices in Isleworth and Chiswick, Central Hounslow, Feltham practices and the Brentford Health Centre.

Dr Nasir said: "I was attracted to the role for several reasons. I am local to Hounslow and I liked the new ideas and flexibility that the Trust was offering to potential employees. The scheme is an innovative and exciting way of working within the community whilst pushing the standard of primary care forward.

"GPs usually have to cover the business side of the practice as well as fulfilling their clinical duties. By working for the PCT under a PMS scheme I have a lot more support both from admin staff and nursing staff which allows me to focus on my clinical interests."

Suzanne Trewavas, Director of Primary Care said: "The PCT, along with other London PCTs, has suffered significantly from the national shortage of GPs. We decided to take active steps to recruit and retain high quality doctors.

"We did this by offering a very flexible contract that allowed GPs to work around obstacles such as childcare commitments whilst developing their interests in their own specialist areas.

"We also offered 'golden hellos', a national scheme of awarding ?10,000 to any newly qualified GP moving into the Borough. The doctors are being strongly supported in their professional development to enable them in time to deliver specialist services such as diabetic care in local surgeries. A number of them are also providing specialist family planning services in our clinics.

Dr Nasir joined Bedfont Clinic in January 2003 after having worked as a locum since finishing his training at Sussex University. He was the first GP to join the PCT after its recent recruitment campaign.
